Thank you for choosing Pet Photos by Olin for your Pet Portraits
Pets are like kids. totally unpredictable. The key to pet portrait sessions is staying relaxed and having fun with it. I like to have your pets get acquainted with me and their surroundings before actually starting your session. Once they're comfortable then we'll get down to business. I hope this guide helps to give you a good understanding of what to expect. I look forward to meeting you and your four legged kids!
hey there!
Prepping for your session with your animal is super helpful. A couple of weeks in advance be consistent in running them through any commands or tricks they know. The repetition and consistent practice beforehand will help them know what you expect of them. It will also help keep the stress level down.
A good walk or playtime will help them come into their session more relaxed. All that pent up energy doesn't bode well for an easy session. but make sure not to overdo it. We don't want them worn out either.
Stay relaxed, there's always a way to get some good shots of your animal. Don't go overboard on your expectations, if you nervous or over excited your pet is going to respond to that and act according to the vibes they're getting from you. Remember. your dog is the one setting the tone for the photo sesssion1 Go with the flow. don't get upset if the session isn't going the way you thought it would. It will all work out.
Bath and brush the day before or early in the day of your session or take to your groomer if that's your preference. It's a god idea to have your pet's nails trimmed as well. If you are having a cul done on your pet. make sure to schedule early enough that their coat has time to grow in a bit and look it's best. We love Allie's Paw Spa in midtown for a good spa treatment for your puppyl
Tear stains - wipe as clean as possible
Dandruff - brush as well as possible, we can use a lint roller if needed. Every image is edited and touched up as needed, so in the long run your animal's portrait's will look great. I ask that you bring your pet in looking their very best as editing can only accomplish so much
If they have a favorite toy and it's something that will help them feel secure. by all means bring it. Please bring clean. spruced up toys if you plan on them being in any photo's. Keep the toy tucked away as a backup.
If your animal has food allergies or sensitivity to any treats please make sure to bring your own. These photo sessions are treat oriented. so bring a bunch. Keep treats tucked away until needed. Soft and chewy are the best treats. easily eaten and no crumbs for them to tempt them and keep their attention.
Safety for your animal is my first priority. During outdoor sessions, unless we are in an enclosed area or your dog is ultra trained, collars need to stay on and in some cases leashes. I will do what I can to minimize the leash while shooting and remove the leash in your purchased images for an extra editing fee. For indoor sessions, collars and tags can be removed.
The first thing to keep in mind is the location. where have we chosen to shoot your session. If it's a nature shoot. in a park. woodland. beach my recommendation is to dress for that type of location. If it's a natural setting you probably don't want to go all fancy outfit unless we're doing a special. themed session.
• Layered outfits and neutral solid colors are great, play with color if that fits your style.
• Clothes you don't mind getting dirty. it's possible right!
• Ladies. a bit more makeup than usual. it's always fun to have your make up done professionally and we have recommendations for make up artists if you need some!
• Even for outdoor sessions. come stylish. you'll want to look your best. Bring a pair of walking shoes and you can slip into your good shoes on location. Comfortable is good.
• For in studio sessions - keep it light and neutral! White, beige, light gray, denim, sage, and brown are some of the best colors for our studio set.
• Wrinkled clothes. logos or bold patterns. distracting or large jewelry.
• Don't wear contrasting tones to your pets
• Clothes that will show your pets hair if they shed a lot
• If your pet is light colored, wear lighter tones and same goes if your pet is darker, wear lighter tones.
The point in doing an outdoor session is to create images of your animal in a natural setting. It's where they are most natural and it's typically very exciting for them. Our team will help you choose a spot that will look great in the photos! We look for spaces that are quiet, have low lying plants and vegetation so we have a good background but we can chat about what's best for your pet before the session.
We typically shy away from using your own backyard because your pet might be too comfortable there and have a hard time sitting still for the photos.
Typically they are best photographed in their own environment. your home. If we are doing a home shoot. please make sure the room(s) are tidy. as clutter will take away from creating beautiful images showcasing your pet.
Most trained dogs are good in either indoor or outdoor setting. If you are looking for more formal portraits the studio is probably the best location. For more fun and goofy photos we love heading to a park or outdoor space that encourages play!
Safety is my first priority. That being said, if your dog is well behaved and trained. we can use a park or favorite outdoor location where they have room to run and jump. When considering if your pet is well trained, ask yourself, will they come when called even if there is something exciting like a squirrel or other dog around? Will they be able to sit and stay for a good chunk of time?
Best advise always is to go with the flow, don't get upset if the session isn't going the way you thought it would It will all work out.
Remember this is a new setting for them. so it may take a few minutes for them to settle and be comfortable Keeping calm is the key and letting them explore a bit helps. You can practice having them walk over paper laid on the floor to get them used to standing or sitting on the paper backdrop I use. I have chairs and a couch that I use as well.
If the studio session is proving too stressful for your pet. let's simply stop and arrange to do the session somewhere else. There is simply no point in stressing your animal out.
We have found that the studio seems to be the best spot for animals that are high energy and have less training.
We try to stay away from using your personal home or yard because it is not always the best space for photography and your pets might be so comfortable that they aren't interested in getting their photos take. We have found that sometimes if you have a highly anxious or nervous animal, a home session might be the best choice for both you and them.
Tips for doing an in-home session is to de-clutter the area(s) we'll be shooting in. Choose rooms with good. natural lighting. Open all the curtains/shades to let in the most natural light possible. I do bring small studio lights to use if needed.
We'll meet. either at my light. bright studio or at a location we've discussed in advance and the seriously fun work begins.
Expect lots of playing with your pet. The more hijinks and shenanigans. the better. In fact. pet parents might even have more fun than the fur kids. and that's okay. too.
I love animals - seriously. Wait until you hear how many I've had. from monkeys to dogs.
After your session. we will meet at our studio for a 1 hour reveal session. and we'll gently guide you through the process of choosing just the right portraiture products for you. This is everyone's favorite part!
It's here we're the most excited. because you finally see the finished product right before your eyes as we decide how to best display your photographs as art in your home It's true concierge-level service ... with a personal touch.
Contact us and then chat over the phone as we try to get to know you and your pet better and we will schedule your session and what you envision your end photography products to look like. We will then determine if an outdoor or indoor session would be best for you and your pet.
We will then send you an online contract and we will be sending you more tips on getting your dog ready. After that. we just wait excitedly for your session!

The most important thing is that we talk and plan your session. Don't get frustrated if on the day of your session things don't go exactly as planned. they almost always don't. That being said. if we all stay relaxed we'll have a fun and relaxed session. My primary focus is the comfort and ease of your pet. We take breaks to ensure time for belly rubs and changing your pet's focus if needed. I shoot in a very relaxed manner to ensure that you and your your pet have a great time. My background as a dog trainer serves to adequately and skillfully work with any type of dog personality.
Simply fill out our booking form on my website www.petphotosbyolin.com or give me a call at (415) 513-5761. We will do our pre-shoot consult when you call and get to know you better. Donna will answer all of your questions and we can finalize a shoot date. To secure your shoot date. a non refundable session fee is required. which will be invoiced at time of booking and can be done on line. We email you a contract and invoice that you can pay on line with a Credit Card or check.
Yes. we will email you a online contract that explains what's included in your session. as well as a release form stating I retain rights to all images and can use them in my Studio marketing. It's all very straightforward and easy!
Between 2-3 weeks after our photo shoot we will meet again for your design and ordering session. All images in your gallery will be edited and ready for you to view and we will assist you in choosing your favorite photos and how you want to display them.
Only indoors. I actually prefer shooting in natural light. but will use studio lights when needed indoors.
Typically. most are a bit nervous in the beginning of the session but will settle down if everyone stays calm. We can get some great shots of them jumping and running around outside or cuddling with you if we are shooting in my studio. If it's just not working out. we may just arrange to come and shoot at your home where they will feel less stressed.
Absolutely! I offer outdoor, at home and in-studio sessions.
We simply reschedule either for better weather day or change to an at home or in-studio session if there is an urgent need to get the session done.
Definitely. whatever type of pet you have. I would love to photograph them for you. Or a combination of different types of pets together!
I recommend booking your Pet Portrait Session at a couple weeks or more in advance. I can sometimes fit you in on shorter notice. but no guarantee.
Digital files can be purchased separately. However. most of our clients opt to purchase wall galleries or an album A digital slideshow of all your images is free to all purchases above $2000 and is a great option for clients wanting digital images.
Approximately 2 weeks after your photo session. we invite you back to our Sacramento studio for your design session where you will be able to view all your images and make all your purchases. We will also be guiding and assisting you in choosing your images for prints, albums and wall art as well as designing your wall galleries with you. This is the best part of the whole process. Because the design session is the only time to make your purchase, we ask that all decision makers be present.
